This is the second post I am making on Barca. submitted by edsop to Barca [link] [comments] In the last post I compared Alena, Riqui and Alena in terms of creation. This time, it will be progression ( i want to do defensive contribution and counter pressing next) It was worth noting that comparing these three with an "ideal" (last time, Iniesta) is not that of equivalence, but more importantly that the comparison within the three is more informative than comparing them to the "ideal". The ideal lends some validity in the metrics I picked IF the ideal outperforms the rest (yes, comparing them to Iniesta was a mistake because Iniesta never does well on stats despite his exceptional quality). If anyone is wondering, the stats are from https://fbref.com/en/. Just like they were in the last post, non-ratio stats are per90 and possession adjusted respectively as needed. The limitations remain true from the last post. Also, remember that if stats have perfect reliability and validity, we can just replace Abidal with a trading bot (we probably should, and earlier too because a tree does better business). The stat comparisons are for mostly fun and provide a sense of direction if the qualities we are looking for are the vital ones we need in Barca. https://preview.redd.it/sxad0s3v7jo51.png?width=707&format=png&auto=webp&s=70f55cf2e36781e505963599b536ca2b4ebc7599 (Prog pass distance = progressive distance / total pass distance) In my humble opinion, these metrics describe how well a player can resist pressure, build threats from deep and how often they find opportunities to play vertical passes. There are no stats for enthusiasm and dynamism so Riqui will suffer. Note Parejo's stats are NOT possession adjusted, I will provide one that is after. https://preview.redd.it/6meu2sew7jo51.png?width=721&format=png&auto=webp&s=68e7c5487d881da46d4a1d45dcb55bff30d21315 Here, everyone's stat are normalized against Busquets's. You can think of it as a % comparison. I think we can all agree on how integral he is to Barca's build up play and that is why I have chosen Sergio as the "ideal" progressor. Again just like Iniesta, no stats capture how high one's soccer IQ is. Stats are means to an end, not the end goal itself. Parejo is here because I think he is one of the world's best orchestrator (and he is in LaLiga playing mostly in the CM position so that lends some comparability). Parejo's switches is capped at 1.5, if it goes further the scale would be fked up. https://preview.redd.it/oekjjzex7jo51.png?width=501&format=png&auto=webp&s=c8d8dfbc7114cd3d9eb498c6c3b067feca494fa9 Above, Busquets dominates the Barca three in all aspects as expected. One could argue that he plays in the CDM and I agree that it will inflate his numbers, but it is the Riquis, Alenas and the De Jongs that we care about. Parejo (possession NOT adjusted) does very well in progressive passes as expected, but he does not enjoy passing under pressure as much as Busquets, as expected. FDJ trumps the other two in 4 out of the 5 areas, playing less in only switches which I do not care as much as prog passes. FDJ like to build from the LB positions and advance upfield to link up so that explains his hesitation to switch to the RB RWF side. So when Koeman says that Setien plays FDJ in the wrong position (CM->LMF/CAM) and should only be played as double pivot CDM->CM, he knows what he is saying (1st place) Alena beats Riqui in 3 out of the 5 areas. Trailing in press resistance and switches. Alena DOES seem fidgety when he does his first touches so that seems to make sense. It it not wrong to say Alena may be better suited to the double pivot role IN TERMS of progression. In the few preseasons, we saw Alena plays in the ArthuIniesta position, and he loves to receive in the interior and swings left footed passes to LWF and LB (2nd place) Riqui, unfortunately, does not bid well in progression. He is smart, active and dynamic, but tends to dribble side ways a lot to find flank overloads. I am personally OK with it and I enjoy watching Riqui doing his dribbles to switch side. But FDJ and Alena just focus on moving the ball forward more which look better on the stats. Rather than saying Alena sucks at creativity and Riqui sucks at progression, we can say Alena fits better as a progressor and Riqui is much better suited to CAM (3rd place) https://preview.redd.it/c2y1ekly7jo51.png?width=535&format=png&auto=webp&s=b210de8b1dc766c54099d1ff52f6e3a28f8ad640 Here is what the radar looks like if Parejo's stats are possession adjusted. He totally demolishes Busquets. I did not adjust for Parejo previously because the possession difference is a bit too large and playing style comes into play. For example, Valencia's possession is around 48%, which means more counterattacks (easier to farm attack stats since opponent defense is wide open) than Barca's humongous 67%. To assume Parejo would perform at the same level against Barca's opponents' 10-0-0 lowblock would be too generous. Valencia-Barca has around 20% possession difference, while for Alena, Betis-Barca is only 10% and they share similar playing styles so I guess adjustment for Alena (and KDB adjusted down in the previous post) is not that irrational. |
