Close to the end of the season I like looking back on preseason predictions. Here are some of my favorites
I don't like to let anyone off the hook for bad (or good) predictions. Below are a few sources with preseason predictions and a few of my favorite good, bad, and funny ones. Please forgive the formatting, I dislike reddit formatting and I am bad at it, but I did my best. There isn't much in here about Liverpool, since not a single one of my these predictions had Liverpool any higher than 6th. ESPN FC The Good John Brewin Best Signing: Jesus Navas The Bad Gab Marcotti Worst signing: Jesus Navas The Funny Raphael Honigstein Golden Boot: Roberto Soldado Kevin Palmer Worst signing: Andy Carroll The Guardian The Good League Winners: Dominic Fifield If Chelsea can secure another high-quality striker before the deadline then they could stamp some authority on the division, particularly with José Mourinho back in the English game. If not, Manchester City's quiet but impressive summer business may give them the edge. Player of the Season: AH Luis Suárez. Picks up his bottom lip, returns from suspension and inspires a Champions League push to attract interest from Barcelona or Real Madrid. But at which club? AL Tempting to predict a tale of the unexpected: a José Mourinho-fuelled Fernando Torres or (whisper it) Luis Suárez ... I'll go for second season Eden Hazard Most Looking Forward To: MC A competitive title fight – Italy, Germany, Spain and France have odds-on favourites, but in England there are three teams with a roughly equal chance of triumphing. The Bad League Winners: Louise Taylor Tottenham. Europa League involvement and the potential loss of Gareth Bale are worries but Roberto Soldado and Paulinho look excellent signings and AVB is a class coach. Player of the Season: LT Hatem Ben Arfa. Providing he stays fit, Ben Arfa belongs on a different planet to most mortals. Capable of eclipsing Rooney, Bale and even Suárez Signing of the Summer: AH Roberto Soldado. The striker who can take Tottenham back into the Champions League and enhance André Villas-Boas's reputation in English football in the process JS Roberto Soldado will show Emmanuel Adebayor what's up. Manager to Watch: AH David Moyes. He's taken on the hardest job in English football, faces a gruelling start and will get no credit for grinding out wins. But he can deliver if he, and United, adapt to different expectations. Guardian Writers’ Predicted Table 3) Manchester United The Funny League Winners: David Hytner Manchester United. It feels unfashionable to tip the defending champions but they were comfortably the best team last season, their squad remains virtually the same and have their rivals really caught up? Player of the Season: JJ If he stays injury free, expect Jack Wilshere to tune up nicely for the World Cup, with his opening act ensuring England qualify. DT Robin van Persie. Started the season just as he finished the last one: scoring goals. But I think Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool will be close Young Player to Watch: SM Jordan Ibe. One league game for Liverpool, one assist, the bizarro Stewart Downing Least Looking Forward to: AH The inevitable "I was misquoted, I've always loved Liverpool" interview from Luis Suárez Football 365 The Good Who’s going to win the league? Sarah Winterburn: It's a toss-up between Chelsea and Man City but I've got a sneaky feeling about Manuel Pellegrini at City. While all the attention is on Jose Mourinho and David Moyes, Pellegrini could quietly go about his business and that business could be winning the title. I like Fernandinho an awful lot and a midfield partnership between him and Yaya Toure is potentially better than anything else in the division. Best New Signing? RMcN: Value wise, Newcastle paying a couple of million to have Loic Remy on loan is a masterstroke. I actually think Aroune Kone will be well worth the £6million Everton have paid for him. Of the big money for big names, I loved watching Schurrle last season. I think Chelsea have got a good'un. How will Luis Suarez mark his first game back after his ban? DS: He'll score, he always does in response to his own stupidity. He'll kiss his wrist, he'll show us his teeth and the commentator will say "well, isn't that just like him." SW: With a hat-trick probably. Who would you be most delighted to see fail? JN: David Moyes because it's a bloody travesty that he was given one of the biggest jobs in world football in an act of blatant nepotism. He already looks ridiculously gauche in the job. If he wasn't British, he'd be being mocked as out of his depth and under-qualified by the press. Look how AVB was treated when he arrived and he'd actually won a treble. There's no time to learn how to be a good manager while managing Manchester United, you should arrive already bloody good and a winner. Moyes fails on all counts The Bad Who’s going to win the league? Rob McNichol: If Rooney stays, then Manchester United. If Rooney goes to Chelsea.......still Manchester United, but a little less. Who’ll be the top scorer? RMcN: Since it's so dreadfully obvious to say Robin Van Persie I'll say Robin Van Persie. NM: Whoever doesn't say Robin van Persie needs a talking to. Andi T: It'd be nice if it was Lukaku. He seems pleasant. But he may not get enough games, so I'll say Soldado. Because Tottenham are definitely finishing fourth. Definitely SW: This is dull but Robin van Persie. He will outscore all the City strikers but there's one of him and four of them JN: Wilfried Bony. The new era of great Wilfs starts here Best new signing? NM: Someone (I forget who) said that Roberto Soldado will score a lot of goals but you won't remember any of them. That's exactly what Spurs need. Nods to more or less everyone Norwich have signed and Emanuele Giaccherini. Wilfried Zaha looks like the real thing, too. And worst? PC: Loic Remy's loan to Newcastle does not seem a winner, and nor does West Brom's purchase of Nicolas Anelka Who’ll be the first manager to go? JN: Roberto Martinez after a disastrous start with Everton. Anyone with a 28.8% win ratio has fairly conclusively proved they can't organise a defence. More likely seems Steve Bruce just because everyone seems to get sick of him quite quickly. How will Luis Suarez mark his first game back after his ban? RMcN: He'll score, then hug his new manager Andre Villas-Boas The Funny And give us the rest of the top four. In order. Please JN: Manchester City, Spurs, Manchester United (Moyes will kill their season) How will the promoted trio do? DS: I've mentioned all three to go down, so that about answers it. Cardiff will be the highest finishers, on that I'd bet my thumbs And worst (new signing)? JN: I'm not convinced that Brendan Rodgers can spot a decent player for his side on anything other than a hit and miss basis, so it seems likely one or more of his signings will be an awful waste of money. Iago Aspas seems a decent bet to be the latest weeping by January and appealing to the Court Of Human Rights to be allowed to freed from the inhuman torment of Rodgers team talks How will Luis Suarez mark his first game back after his ban? NM: He'll take over the Tannoy at Anfield to make a very clear statement about his future at Liverpool, then write it out in fire on the pitch, then take out a 24-page ad in The Liverpool Echo reiterating his position. Then denies the whole thing in the Uruguayan press.
Struggling 24/7/365 with compulsive behaviors/actions: gambling, sex, food, internet.
Believe it or not, it would mean a lot to me if you read this. I'll try to keep it short but my style usually means lots of rambling. Sorry. TL;DR: Constant gambling since I was 13, every day with few exceptions. Predictable outcome: lost everything, ran up debt, repaid debt, won some money, lost it all, ran up more debt, rinse and repeat. Porn addiction. Addicted to casual sex. Horrible diet, strong, overwhelming cravings for junk food and carbs. Can't stay off the internet. Basically a junkie trying to get high 24/7/365 on some sort of bet or sexy message/encounter. Pretty easy to hide except for the times when I wipe out and lose everything gambling. My life is a constant struggle. From the second I wake up, until I fall asleep, I'm battling compulsive behaviors. This has been ongoing for at least 15-17 years now and has only gotten worse as time has gone on. Gambling: I've gambled nearly every single day for the last 15 years. I'm in my early 30s. I'd say maybe 5-10 days per year I don't gamble, but only because I don't have any money or way to do so. I've played poker, blackjack, bet sports, played fantasy sports. I've borrowed thousands and gambled it away. I've ruined my credit to gamble. Taken out payday loans to gamble. Lost paychecks within an hour. Lost friends and pissed off my family over gambling. I've done some embarrassing things in order to gamble. Neglected my own health and well being. Put myself in danger. I've scammed people to gamble. I've wasted countless hours gambling, looking at odds, watching games, doing research. I'm a pretty smart guy, but my compulsions get in the way of anything productive I've tried to do. I'm such a fool. I laugh at people who play the lottery or slots. Gambling with an advantage is possible, if you stick to pokesports betting/card counting. That's who I always wanted to be, the disciplined pro who put in the work, rode out the crazy swings up and down, and made it through with a solid profit. I actually did this, for a few years. It felt good. I wasn't just blindly tossing money away. I was playing within my means, and playing with an edge. Then it all snapped, I hit a losing streak, moved up in stakes, and lost it all. Again. I just can't enjoy myself unless I'm maxed out, betting it all, and feeling that thrill during the game, or the hand, or whatever. Instead of just betting $100, I "have to" bet $1000 to get some sort of sick rush. In my head, if I bet $100 and win, I look at it as losing out on a possible $900 extra, if I made my normal bet. So then I chase that $900. Sex: When I was about 13, a friend introduced me to porn. I was at his house for a night, and he pulled up some pictures of naked celebrities online. They were probably fake, but I didn't care. I was young and didn't really know anything about sex. We just sort of looked at a few pics and went back to playing video games or whatever. Boys being boys, I guess. Nothing sexual happened, it was sort of like someone showing another person a Playboy and both people staring at it for a bit then moving on. But as soon as I got home, I logged on to the site. I was hooked. Combining the internet and sex was the worst thing that could have happened to me. I was going into Yahoo chat rooms and finding girls to have cyber sex with. Cam sex. Phone sex. Sex on the mic. I was watching porn every day. I had girls in multiple states who I would cyber with or have phone sex with, multiple times a week. It only got worse. I was still a virgin at 19. I was still having tons of phone sex and cyber sex, and watching more porn than ever. Then I found Craigslist. I forget if I replied to an ad, or posted one, but I ended up meeting someone who lived an hour away for sex. I was hooked to this, too. Over the last 10 years or so, I've posted multiple ads on Craigslist and Reddit for casual sex. I've met a minimum of 100 women (luckily for me, I've been able to keep it somewhat controlled, and at least have kept it to 100% legal age girls...minors are too risky even for me), and likely 200+ women. I usually have sex with anywhere from 5-10 women per month, and get bored with them after a month or two in most cases, and find new ones. Sometimes I will wake up, watch porn for a few hours, and meet 2 different women. Then come home and watch more porn. I've been banned from POF and OKC for messaging girls for sex. I just make a new email address and set up a new account and do it all over again. I've tried to quit porn. I went almost 3 weeks without it, and then fell right back into it, worse than ever. I've never had a long term girlfriend, despite girls talking to me/wanting to date me or at least try something more serious than meaningless sex. I'm not a bad looking guy, I'm smart, and I've always held a full time job. I've just never been interested in anything more than a quick high from sex or gambling. I've had sex in the car several times, and in motel rooms. Strangely, I've never been to a strip club, or paid hookers for sex. I never really saw the appeal. I've had sex with fat women, skinny women, married women, black women, and pretty much everything in between. My only real "rules" were females only, and legal age only. For the most part, looks didn't matter, your marital status didn't matter, your age didn't matter. I've done it a handful of times without a condom. My brain must be so messed up that I can't even get a full erection anymore. I've watched the videos on porn induced ED and it seems to fit with what's going on. Somehow, I have escaped thus far with no STDs and no pregnancies. I got tested a few months ago and it came back totally clean, according to the doctor. Food: My diet is awful. I have a powerful craving for carbs and junk food. I eat loads of ice cream, pizza, Chinese food, burgers and fries. Some days when I'm feeling sad, I eat way more than usual. Others, I don't eat at all. I try to drink lots of water, but sometimes I fail because I can't drag myself out of bed. Despite this, I'm surprisingly healthy overall, by every metric. I'm slightly overweight, but only by about 10 pounds or so. You wouldn't see me and call me grossly obese, or even fat. Just a regular person who could maybe use a bit more exercise but nothing over the top. I got blood tests and a physical done a few months ago just as a precaution, and it all came back totally normal. Cholesterol: normal. Blood pressure: normal. No signs of any diabetes or anything else. I feel good, despite the ongoing stress in my life. Internet: in addition to the issues with porn, I have an almost constant need to be "checking" things online. I guess this is a classic OCD symptom. I'm always opening multiple tabs, refreshing my email, clicking new pages to get that dopamine rush. I think this is why I've fallen into gambling. It's constant action, constant updates, new scores, new games, every day is a new matchup. So yeah, that's really just the tip of the iceberg. I've built up an entire life around gambling, and I've hidden the sex from almost everyone. My family tries to ask me if I have a girlfriend yet, and I just mumble something or change the subject. I'm not really sure what to do, or where to turn. All I know is I've basically wasted the best years of my life, and it will probably take a few years to sort everything out, if I can bring myself to come clean, and quit, and stay away. But it's going to be basically impossible. Everyone who talks to me, brings up gambling. They know I bet and like talking to me about it. I was planning a trip to Vegas with my family for next year, but probably won't be going now. I work in the gaming industry. Betting sports means that I'd have to avoid sports entirely, for fear of being triggered. How the hell can I do that? I live in a city with lots of major sports. Am I supposed to keep the TV and radio off, and stay off the internet totally? Not talk to anyone? I'd literally have to quit my (pretty high paying, enjoyable to an extent, GREAT benefits including health care) job, lose friends I've had for over a decade (they gamble, but do so responsibly), and go through hell known as withdrawal. All with no guarantee that it even works. I could move across the country, start over, and then fall right back to where I am now, if not worse. Not to mention the sex. If I give up porn, that's one thing. But sex is a basic human need. And I have no clue how to interact with women other than trying to have sex with them. Like everything, and everyone else, they aren't interesting to me. Nothing matters except gambling and sex. Small talk is pointless. I don't care. Sigh... I guess the positives are that I still have my job, and my great benefits. I'm still healthy. I've avoided a truly life changing event such as an STD or pregnancy. I am in debt (roughly 50k, with 17k or so car debt, the rest unsecured credit card and loans), which sucks, but it can be repaid over time. My credit is actually better now than it has been in a while. I haven't fallen into drug or alcohol addiction, thankfully. So there are some reasons to keep going. Even after all of this, though, I just want to gamble. I want the action. I want sex. I can't imagine life without it. And yet, I really do need to quit. I don't think there is any way I can simply manage it and keep it to a reasonable level. I know the stories of alcoholics, and how they can't just have one beer.
