From the inspiration albums that
echoshield, I've been seeing a tentative interest in clean-looking, simple rugged watches. This is something I've been researching for myself, so I decided to put together a little inspiration thread of affordable watches. This will include both quartz watches (replace the battery), and automatics (fully springs and gears, recharges with the movement of your wrist).
Please add your current watch / cool inspo watches!
This is by no means exhaustive, but heavily based on my personal tastes and you should head over to
/watches for the whole rundown.
<$100: - Casio. My current everyday watch is currently <$20 on amazon. You definitely get what you pay for in terms of materials and finish, but it's surprisingly rugged. I submerse it in saltwater at least several times a week, and generally beat the living crap out of it. There's a busier-looking world time version as well, and artofsushi wears a solar version that I can't find right now. Keep in mind these watches are sized pretty small, so if you have Arnie wrists you may want something bulkier to match your physique.
- G-Shock is a Casio line, usually thought of as massive/bulky/unsightly. However they have one manageable model which is based on the silver digital casio above. Wears a decent size, stupidly rugged.
- Timex. The weekender is /malefashionadvice's go-to suggestion, and it's pretty solid. swap out the band for a leathenylon monochrome and you have a pretty decent watch. Cons: the lume leaves a lot to be desired, and the ticking is LOUD (belongs in the bottom of the sock drawer at night). I've found it a bit less durable than my Casio from personal experience, but that involved a 5-foot drop on concrete. An alternative to the weekender is the Easy Reader which eschews the military watch-inspired 24h markings for a cleaner, almost grandpa-look.
- Seiko. This is probably the best value you'll get under $100. The Seiko 5 line has the most diverse, cheapest automatic watches you can get your grubby paws on. Here are two of my favorites. While these watches don't need any hand-winding or batteries, they will stop when their spring runs out (usually a 40 hour reserve). So if you wear them every other day, you will most likely be fine, but any more and you'll have to reset the time. Part of the cost of owning a badass complicated watch!
- cool old russian watches I've been eyeing the vostok amphibia scubadude for a while, you can find it on ebay for $80 or so. I'll report back if/when I snag it (the reputable ebay seller for Vostok is zenitar). Look at brands like Raketa, more Raketa, Zim. Also Vostok made the Life Aquatic watch, as well as a lot of Russian watches with military symbolism in their Komandirske line.
- HMT might be your go-to for funky retro, super cheap dress watches. generally ships from India on ebay. Some cool ones, but might look a bit grandpa after a while.
$100-200 - Citizen - their Eco-Drive line starts around here. They are quartz, but the face has an embedded solar panel so it'll never need a battery change. They go from sleek to way too much clutter to Just right (IMO).
- Orient is probably my favorite in this bracket. I've personally owned the Black Mako and found it to be a fantastic diver for the price. It has scuba dived with me to 90 feet, and finally broke down as a result of my own stupidity. One of my current attainable grail watches is the Orient Bambino, which has this fantastic review from W&W. Other models to check out are the Orient Ray, esteem, symphony…
- Seiko comes up here again. The SKX007 is the standard for mass-produced dive watches. at under $170, it's a Rolex-influenced diver that will take a serious beating. The 009 is similar with the "pepsi bezel". The Seiko Monster is probably the next most popular Seiko in this proce range, with the Orange Monster specifically as a /watches favorite (though I don't really know why).
- Rodina Bauhaus This is the most similar to the current fad of MVMT/Cadence watches, but really the cheapest minimalist watc you should consider buying. In White, and also in blue, black. Automatic movement, design copied off of some ridiculously expensive european watches. /watches is polarized on it - half of the members refuse to touch it because they consider it a fake/ripoff, while hte other half acknowledges that this design has been bounced around a dozen manufacturers for the past 50 years and it's nothing new to copy.
Again, this is most of the watches on my mind that seem applicable to the aesthetics I've seen displayed on this sub. If you have any questions about any watches or about watches in general (straps, bands, automatic/quartz, mineral glass/hardlex/sapphire), I can answer some in the comments. Finally, when you narrow down a watch style you like, it may behoove you to visit
/watches. there's a butt-ton of information out there.
submitted by I thought I'd try something a little different and combine two of my collections into one post. I've been collecting watches and comics for around three years. Although I had watches before, I wasn't really collecting them, just hoarding them. You can probably tell from the first two pictures, that I have a favourite brand, and a favourite style. I have tried to combine a comic and watch from around the same year, although I don't really know exact dates of any of my watches so these could be way off. Also by no means am I in the same league as the majority of collectors of either comics or watches, I just have some favourites that I'd like to share. You lot could probably tell me more about my watches than I know, but I'll sum up each one, and why I like it. Let me know what you think.
Here’s the collection:

1960’s/70’s Vintage Tissot Automatic Seastar:

http://i.imgur.com/mdCJne4.jpg My latest purchase, that I feel I got at a very good price, I bought this watch as a daily beater really, hence why it's not in pristine condition. I like the expandable bracelet, as it is my first watch with one. The corresponding comic is Marvel Super-Heroes Vol 1:12, (1967) Captain Marvel's first appearance.
1960’s/70’s Vintage 14k Gold Tissot Visodate Seastar Seven:

This was my first watch in a precious metal. I'd like to get a strap similar to my other, Seastar Seven, but perhaps a darker brown. I never let a strap stop me form making a purchase, as I have almost always swapped them before I begin wearing a new watch. Those with a keen eye may notice the date is way out. It’s an absolute bitch to change so I’m just gunna wait til the 21st to wear it again. The comic with this one is Marvel Super-Heroes Vol 1:18 (1969), featuring the first appearance of the 1969 Guardians of the Galaxy team, when Yondu was a sweet af tribal hunter, although I do enjoy space pirate Yondu equally.
1972 Vintage Omega Geneve:

http://i.imgur.com/8cJESCf.jpg The first real 'luxury' watch that I bought myself, as a present for my 22nd Birthday. I loved the blue metallic dial, and my jeweller convinced me to go with a blue leather strap, which I am grateful for as I absolutely love it. The corresponding comic, is Marvel Feature Vol 1:1 (1971), the first appearance of The Defenders super team.
70’s Vintage Omega Automatic Deville:

http://i.imgur.com/QxT3Els.jpg I bought this one at auction a couple of years ago. This isn’t in the greatest condition, and was bought as a beater, but I still like the TV shape face, and might attempt to restore it myself one day. Corresponding comic is Captain Britain Vol 1:1 (1976), the first appearance of the first real British superhero. I also have the free mask that was included with the comic originally.
70’s Vintage Tissot Seastar Seven:

http://i.imgur.com/alkEvus.jpg This was my first vintage purchase. (You’re probably noticing a lot of firsts in this, most of my watches were my first something or other) I like the green dial, although I’m not 100% sure if it’s original. This was the strap I mentioned earlier, it looks like tiger bread, which is delicious. The comic I have put with this one is Marvel Premier Vol 1:47 (1979), featuring Scott Lang’s first appearance as Ant-Man.
2011 Tissot Classic Dream:
http://i.imgur.com/269weDp.png,
http://i.imgur.com/72CLsgt.jpg My first real watch that I bought myself, this was before I found my love for mechanical watches, and although my first purchase out of these watches, it’s the newest one. Although I’m not a huge fan of Quartz movements, because the ticks remind me of school clocks, and make time go slower, I do still have a place in my heart for this one. I love the black dial, roman numerals. The comic with this one is also my most recent comic, in terms of publishing date. It is Marvel Zombies Vol 1:1, Spiderman variant cover. It is also my only comic in a graded box, (9.8, if anyone’s wondering) and signed by Arthur Suydam, the cover artist.
It seems fitting that the crown jewels of both my collections are from the same era.
My late 80’s early 90’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust:
http://i.imgur.com/p1A8TEg.jpg,
http://i.imgur.com/8UZ0zaZ.jpg I got this watch for my 18th birthday, it was my first luxury watch, and have been in love with it ever since. I’m not one for super flashy watches, so this is at the cusp of flashiness for me. I was going to change the bracelet out for something leather, but I felt that most of my watches are leather straps, so it’ll be on a jubilee for the foreseeable future. You can probably guess the comic that the Rolex is with, considering it’s been pretty popular for the last few months. New Mutants Vol 1:98, featuring the infamous Deadpool in his first comic book appearance.
Cheers for bearing with me, I could have probably formatted this in an easier to read way, but I don’t know how. I aint no English scholar neither, so my grammar, spelling, formatting etc. may have been off here and there.
P.S. Sorry for the pictures, I'm no expert in photography, and I can see some of them are pretty shameful after uploading them.
P.P.S. Also in case anyone is wondering; my watch/jewellery boxes are called called Stackers, made by LC Designs. You can buy loads of them, stack ‘em high and make some sweet watch tower.
P.P.P.S. Also, yes, those are Jackie Chan talismans, and the coin is an 1840 silver East India Company Rupee if one of you was wondering
